The Varsity Boys Basketball season came to end at the hands of the Rochester Falcons on Monday, March 8 in the first round of district play.
The Falcons defeated the Wildcats 58-48.
The Wildcats were lead by junior Chris Calvin, who scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed six rebounds.
Senior Gary Wurtz had seven points and two steals, while fellow senior Mike Bertling added eight points and seven rebounds, and Matt Veersteg had five steals and eight points for the Wildcats.
Head Coach Paul Marfia said that it came down to the fact that Rochester made more plays than Oxford.
‘We played tough at times, but at times we we’re a little careless, whether it be a three second or stepping over the line for a over and back.? he said.
He added that those were things that can’t happen when tournaments roll around.
He also credited Rochester for hitting their open shots, as well as hitting free-throws in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 39-30 entering the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were able to trim the lead to four with two minutes left, but Rochester stepped to the line and started hitting their free-throws.
In fact, they hit all 12 in the quarter to hold off Oxford.
‘I’m very proud of my seniors…I thought they did a great job of leading by example,? he concluded.
