The Varsity Cheer squad captured first place in the Division 2 All-Oakland Cheer Championship on Saturday, Jan. 23.
They defeated South Lyon 716.8580 to 688.4170 to claim the title.
According to Head Coach Shari Russell, the most important thing was the fact that they broke 700 for a total score. ‘Breaking 700 has been one of our goals, so we were very excited,? she said.
The cheer squad were trailing South Lyon by 10 points entering the final round, but due to a strong final round that included their major tumbling and stunting routines propelled them to the top.
‘This success has given the team more confidence and we are hoping to use this confidence to drive us the rest of the season so we can continue to improve and finish the season strong,? she added.
Russell stated that she was proud of the way the girls have overcome adversity this season due to injury and other problems. ‘The girls have risen to the challenge everytime an obstacle was thrown their way. They never let anything get them down,? she said.
Up next for the cheer squad is the Grand Blanc Bobcat Cheer Classic Saturday, Jan. 30.
