Area judge to retire after 26 years on district bench

Goodrich-On Monday night, 67th District Court Judge Richard Hughes of the Burton Division attended the village council meeting to thank the community he has served for 26 years.
In addition to Goodrich and Atlas Township, the division also covers the communities of Davison, Davison Township, Richfield Township and Otisville.
Hughes will turn 70-years-old next summer, prior to the November 2010 election, and under state law is ineligible to make another run for the public court.
Hughes was appointed to the 67th District Court by then-Gov. John Engler in 1994, and then ran and won an election in 1996 for the remainder of the term. He was re-elected in 1998 and 2004.
‘Thank you all for your support over the past years,? said Hughes, who served as a lawyer for 26 years prior to his appointment. ‘It has been an honor serving the people of Goodrich and Atlas Township.?
The primary is scheduled for Aug. 3, 2010, followed by a general election on Nov. 2, 2010.The term runs for six years.
