The Varsity Softball team got off to a rough start as they opened Flint Metro League play against Cilo on Thursday, April 23: they got swept.
The first game for the Wildcats was one they would like to forget. They played aggressive defense against the Mustang hitters, but the offense fell by the side. The Wildcats struck out 15 times in a 5-2 loss. In the second game, the offense fared better. Senior Kylie Bowles went one for three with a home run, but it wasn’t enough as the Cats dropped the second game 5-4.
The following day, the Cats had something to prove as they took on Lake Orion in a doubleheader. Orion entered the game undefeated, but Oxford was able to end that streak with a 3-2 victory. Junior Allie Laidlaw singled in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to stun Lake Orion.
During the second game, some mental lapses in the outfield pushed across four unearned runs for Lake Orion, which doomed the Wildcats. They lost 6-1. Corinne Luxton had two homeruns and two RBI’s to lead the Wildcat attack against Lake Orion.
Even with the mental mistakes, Head Coach Kristi McDevitt was pleased with the teams performance. ‘Overall we did another great job defensively, and Corinne (Luxton) rebounded nicely after pitching 13 innings just the day before,? said Coach McDevitt.
With the 1-3 week, Oxford fell to 7-3 overall, and 0-2 in the FML. The Wildcats look to use home field to their advantage as they take on Lapeer West in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 30.
