Township, county move Green Road Bridge project forward

Atlas Twp.- The Genesee County Road Commission and the township agreed on March 30 to move forward with a contract to replace the Green Road Bridge.
Fred Peivandi, director of engineering at the GCRC said the project will cost $425,000, of which the county will fund $85,000 for engineering fees and the township will cover the $340,000. Atlas Township Supervisor Shirley Kautman-Jones said funding for the project will come from the general township fund.
The GCRC board of directors approved the plan on April 7.
Peivandi said the plans for the new bridge should be completed by June 12 with the project sent out for bid by July 7. Construction should begin by Aug. 17 and the bridge will open for traffic by Nov. 6.
The decision comes after Peivandi, along with GCRC Director John Daly, attended the March township board of trustees meeting. The consensus of the trustees was to replace the 70-year-old bridge sooner rather than later after it was shut down indefinitely by the GCRC following a Dec.13 inspection by engineers from Flint-based WadeTrim.
The township voted to fund the project after Daly suggested several options with outside help were unlikely in the near future.
Peivandi said the bridge replacement will include the entire superstructure, sub-structure, beams and deck material.
