Coming off a year with a record of 10-3, the Varsity Golf team is looking to take the next step and advance to Regionals this year.
Varsity Head Coach Terry Kelley looks to instill more than just the fundamentals in his boys this year, he wants to see them grow in how they manage the golf course, their etiquette and behavior on the golf course.
Heading into the year, the boys lost a lot of leadership and only returned one Senior from last year’s team, Liam Gallivan. Coach Kelley is expecting him to teach the younger members of the golf team the expectations and understandings of what it is like to play in the Flint Metro League. ‘Liam is a good senior and a very skilled player? said Kelley
‘We are definitely younger,? Kelley said. ‘But our guys remain hard workers and they are progressing quite nicely; they want to be good, and they believe that they can be good.?
With the loss of the Seniors from last year’s team, Coach Kelley is looking for others to step up and contribute, one of which is Sophomore Brandon Schin. ‘He is one of the best young talents on the team. As a Freshman he lead the team in scoring? said Kelley. Some of the others that he is looking for contributions from this year include Kevin Cramer, Scott McIsaac, Cody Collier, Tim Dutzy and Corey Young.
Coach Kelley praised how athletic and hard-working all of his guys were. ‘Everyone on the team is athletic. I am fortunate enough to have them all in the program? he said. ‘I probably haven’t had a team from top to bottom that had this good of swings that were this good.?
One of the keys to the season is how quickly the boys from JV can adjust to playing on the Varsity level. ‘It’s a big step going from JV to Varsity.? He is also looking to see how the guys manage the new home course, Devil’s Ridge, which they will play on for the first time this year.
‘The course management and knowledge of the rules is going to be key,? he said.
The golf team begins the season with games against Luthern High North and Romeo before beginning Flint Metro League play.
