The Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling teams were not satisfied with winning the Flint Metro League Titles. They wanted more.
On Friday Feb 27, the Varsity teams got more ? the Boys won Regionals while the Girls qualified second.
The boys had four outstanding baker games in the six game set, but still came in fifth with a score of 1,141. They trailed Walled Lake Central, Holly, Lake Orion and Walled Lake Northern.
The boys picked up their efforts in the team games, highlighted by Junior Mike Magyar’s ridiculous effort in Game 1 ? a spare in frame one followed by 10 straight strikes enroute to a 286 game, a school record.
His effort helped the boys move into second place behind WLC after the first game.
The strikes continued in the second game when Senior Steven Lafnear threw seven and Senior John Taylor threw 10 to help Oxford take the lead over WLC by 10 pins heading into the third game.
Senior Brandon Burgess bowled a 246 and Junior Brandon Wynkoop threw a 215 game in the final game to help the Wildcats clinch a Regional Championship.
‘All five bowlers contributed and it was a total team effort,? said Oxford Head Coach JR Lafnear. ‘These boys respond well under pressure, they did it against Kearsley to win a share of the league title and they did it again today.?
The Varsity Girls fared just as well as the boys, but came up just short by 34 pins to Walled Lake Central.
The girls got off to a hot start, claiming the top spot with six baker scores of 200, 202,191, 176, 156 and 158.
They extended their lead in the first game with a 932 game, but began to struggle a little bit in the second and third game, bowling games of 849 and 895 respectively.
WLC capitalized on the games, bowling 934 in game two and 959 in game three to clinch Regionals.
‘The girls are disappointed they didn’t win the regional but are excited to be going to Muskegon to roll for a state title,? said Lafnear.
Senior Anna Moses led the Wildcats with a 610 series and a school record 244 game. Junior Kelly Cartner bowled games of 223 and 211.
On Saturday Feb 28, the Individual Regionals were held and Wildcat Cartner was the only individual to qualify for State finals.
This is her second straight year to advance to the state finals.
