Oxford’s varsity bowling teams capped off remarkable seasons as both the Girls and the Boys defeated Flint Kearsley and claimed League Titles for the regular season.
The Oxford Girls were able to defeat Kearsley 20-10, but the score did not indicate how well each team played.
Kearsley matched the girls shot for shot in each baker match and individual game with every game going down to the wire.
The first baker match would finally be decided in the 10th frame when Ashlee High bowled two strikes in the final frame and propelled Oxford to a 172-164 victory.
But Kearsley was able to take advantage of some missed shots by the Wildcats early in the second baker match, holding on to win 157-148.
After the baker matches, the girls found themselves trailing 6-4.
The Oxford girls then regrouped and won three of the individual matches behind Senior Liz Laframboise’s 199, Sarah Decker’s 176 and High’s 172.
Senior Kelly Cartner was able to start the Wildcats off on the right foot in the second game, winning 219-203.
High had another strong game, and at one point bowled seven strikes in eight frames, propelling her to her final score of 234.
The girls were able to hold off late rallies by Kearsley to achieve the outright Flint Metro League title.
Meanwhile, the boys were battling just as hard for a share of the league title with Holly.
Coming in at 7-1, the boys needed to win in order to be Co-Champions.
Kearsley would make it tough on the boys, beating the Wildcats 268-224 in the first baker match.
The second baker match went the Wildcats way, 233-181. With the comeback, the Wildcats were able to take a 6-4 lead after the baker matches.
Even with the losses, Kearsley was able to keep the pressure on the boys in the first set of individual games.
Oxford’s John Taylor, Mike Maygar and Brandon Burgess were able to win their matches, but Oxford trailed 10-9 heading into the second individual game.
This set the stage for the big comeback, which was lead by Wildcat Senior Steven Lafnear’s 233.
Taylor sealed the victory for Oxford when he threw three consecutive strikes in the tenth frame.
The boys won 19-11.
The Wildcats will compete in the best of Flint Tournament next week before heading off to Regionals in Commerce Township.
