Oxford’s wrestling team capped off its amazing season by capturing the 2008-2009 Flint Metro League championship on Saturday.
The Wildcats won their third straight FML crown in dominating fashion, scoring 248.5 points for the event, finishing well ahead of second place Linden. They set the record for the most points in the event, shattering the previous one held by Fenton by 27.5 points.
Up next for the Wildcats is a potential run to the state championships, which begins Thursday night with a district meet at home against Avondale.
‘We had a great weekend of wrestling,? said Oxford Head Coach Scott Coach. ‘We are looking forward to districts this Thursday.?
The Wildcats placed in 13 out of the 14 individual meets, capturing three titles and finishing second and third five times each.
The individual titles went to Matt Frisch at 125-pound weight division, Mike Myer at 152-pound weight division and Dylan Smith capturing the heavyweight division. This was Frisch’s second straight individual title, winning at 112-pound last year.
Calvin Cavanaugh (112), Mike Thomas (119), Geoffrey Charles (171), Josh Villarreal (189) and Prescott Line (215) all finished second in their division, while Jacob Peasley (103), Zac Miller (130), Ben Ralston (140), Bo Cantara (145) and A.J. Logan (160) placed third for their respective divisions.
The victory in the tournament capped off an amazing season for the Wildcats where they finished 31-2 in duel meets, setting the school record.
The previous record was 26-4, which was set last year. They also finished 9-0 in the FML regular season.
