Imagine a device that works almost instantly and kills more than 99.7% of the fungus, bacteria and other germs on a wrestling mat through the use of disinfecting ultraviolet lights.
Pretty soon, Oxford-area Oxford wrestlers will no longer have to imagine as the wrestling programs will be able to use a Sterilaser.
Used at the 2008 Michigan High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Finals, the Sterilaser kills dust mites, tape worms, viruses, mold and bacteria.
The device will be located at the Oxford High School wrestling room, where Wildcat wrestlers and other area wrestlers, such as those in the Oxford Youth Wrestling Program, can use it.
Christine Borg, president of the youth program, estimated it cost about $1,500 and said it fills a need.
‘The Oxford High School team couldn’t afford this, and we had extra money and thought we’d purchase it since we all can benefit from it,? she explained.
Prior to the Sterilaser, the wrestling team used an ionizer to keep the mats clean. The ionizer purifies the air, killing the airborne germs.
Borg said the sterilaser will be very beneficial since it’ll help prevent outbreaks of skin problems like ringworm.
‘There’s a great need for this in wrestling programs,? she said. ‘It should be a big help to prevent skin irritations from spreading.?
OHS wrestling head coach Scott Couch said skin problems that spread among wrestlers can devastate a team or a season.
‘It’s a good investment,? he said. ‘We really appreciate it, and we’re very thankful for the opportunity. This will keep us clean and healthy and give us one more line of defense to make sure we’re successful.?
