Local track teams distinguish themselves at invite

Although neither Brandon nor Goodrich’s boys or girls track teams took first place at the April 2 Goodrich Invitational, both schools did themselves proud.
The Goodrich girls team had the best showing among local teams, finishing second with 97 points, six behind first-place Atherton. Meanwhile, the Brandon girls team finished fifth (54).
Brandon and Goodrich finished back-to-back in the boys competition, with the Blackhawks placing third (61) and Goodrich fourth (52). Linden won the event with 83.5 points.
The Martians? girls squad took first place in four events. The 3200 relay team of Jill Zirnhelt, Sam Minkler, Kristen Poulos and Janee Jones won that event (10:16.55). Other Goodrich first-place finishers were Poulos (1600, 5:29.87), Jackie Cornwell (discus, 99?); and Rebecca Scott (shot put, 35?4?).
In addition, the Martians brought home second-place finishes in four events. Michelle Elliott took two of those finishes, in the 100 hurdles (17.28) and the 300 hurdles (51.63). Minkler finished second in the 800 (2:35) and Betsy Schumacher did likewise in the shot put (31?9-1/2?).
Other Goodrich placers were: Minkler (third, 3200, 13:21.3); Kate Maciag (fourth, 3200, 13:22); Schumacher (third, discus, 86?); and Andrea Tubbs (sixth, pole vault, 6?6?).
The Blackhawk girls earned one first place finish, as the 400 meter relay team of Kylie Kayga, Amelia Boot, Sarah Koss and Patrice Andre took that honor (54.99).
In addition, the Blackhawks earned two second place finishes, in the 800 relay (1:55.98) and in the 200 (Andre, 28.36). Andre also finished third in the long jump (14?1-1/2?).
Other Brandon placers were: Danielle Ashford (fourth, 300 hurdles, 55.69 and sixth, 100 hurdles, 18.71); Brittany Stedman (fourth, 800, 2:45 and sixth, discus, 84?8?); the 1600 meter relay team (fourth, 4:35.4); Koss (fifth, 100 hurdles, 17.69 and sixth, 300 hurdles, 56.88); Sarah Bond, (fifth, shot put, fifth, 30?8-1/2?); and Boot (sixth, 100, 14.28).
In the boys competition, the Blackhawks nabbed two first-place finishes, with R.C. Carpenter winning the high jump (5?10?) and Josh Luczak taking the discus (125?9?).
Brandon also took one second-place finish, as Ben Reed took runner-up in the 1600 (4:51.3). Adam Hyde earned two third-place finishes, in the 300 hurdles (42.66) and the 110 hurdles (16.86).
Other Brandon placers were: Carpenter (fourth, 400, 55.43); Reed (fourth, 800, 2:11.46 and fourth, 3200, 10:56.4); the 1600 relay team of Hyde, Luczak, Brendon Moquin and Carpenter (fourth, 3:53.05); the 800 relay team of Hyde, Reed, Matt Crandall and Carpenter (fifth, 1:40.15); and Ian Edmonds (sixth in both the 110 hurdles (17.94) and 100 (12.47)).
The Martians? boys squad didn’t win any events, but they took second in three events: the 110 hurdles (Andy Benson, 16.18); the pole vault (Ben O’Morrow, 10?6?); and the 400 relay (47.46).
In addition, Goodrich attained three fourth-place finishes: Charlie Richards in the 300 hurdles (45.46); Jay McAbee in the long jump (18?1?) and the 800 meter relay team (1:39.02). Chris Ademec earned fifth in the 400 (55.63).
