The year 2008 in Clarkston school sports

The Wolves have shared the good times and fans have been by their side throughout the bad.
This week, as well as next week, we will look back on some of the highlights from the beginning of the year.

January 9
Unstoppable: Cagers faced off against their cross-town rival Lake Orion in their fifth game of the season and wanted to hold onto their undefeated record.
The two teams remained close on the score board, Vincent Booker brought his Dragons into the lead by three. Oliver Kupe and Julius Porter tied the score.
Matt Kamieniecki finished the game for the Wolves with the last basket, 48-46.
February 6
Racers victorious: The varsity girls ski team took first place at the Traverse City Invitational.
Hannah Wolf and Maddy Dunn led the girls to scoring 30 points in the giant slalom. Wolf finished first (:53.75) and Dunn took second place (:54.56).
A few weeks later the girls won their regional meet at Mount Holly with 23 points.
Tyler Kenerson and Chris Bland qualified to compete individually for the MHSAA State Meet.
February 27
Breaking through the ice: Tyler Frakes? hat trick in the third period of the MHSAA pre-regional playoffs helped the Icers to take Port Huron Northern out of the running, 7-2.
Taking over the league: The boys swim team won their OAA II league meet after three days of competition. During the competition one diver, three swimmers and two relay teams qualified to go to the MHSAA state meet and four boys set new school records.
March 5
15-peat district champs: After winning the OAA league, the Cagers beat Waterford Mott for their 15th consecutive District title, 65-43.
Clearing the ice: The Wolves taught their competition it didn’t matter what happened during the season, the varsity hockey team had the potential to go as far as any other team in the post-season.
They won the regional title after beating Rochester Unified and Grand Blanc.
Last race: Hannah Wolf won her second individual state championship on February 25.
The girls varsity team took third place during the MHSAA Class A Ski Final.
After two races they had a score of 81. The team finished slalom with 56 points. They had the top score in giant slalom of 25.
Cheer on: The Varsity Competitive Cheer team took fifth place at their MHSAA regional competition on Saturday. After three rounds they scored a total of 681.690 points.
March 13
Cagers flatten Flintstones: The boys varsity basketball team beat Flint Southwestern Academy to win their sixth regional title.
Wrestling champs place at finals: Adam Lauzun placed the highest for the grapplers during the state finals.
He placed in second in the 171 weight class behind the number one ranked wrestler, Ben Bennett from Rockford.
Five more wrestlers made it to the finals, Bryant Craft (189), Matt Deitz (125), Alex Popp (130), Evan King (145) and Sloan Hadsall (215).
Heartbreaker: Once again the boys varsity basketball team was blocked by Saginaw in the quarterfinals.
Saginaw held the lead throughout the first three quarters, but Clarkston turned things around and tied the game but the end of the fourth.
The Wolves played two overtime periods until losing to Saginaw, 86-77.
April 16
Tough tennis at tournament: The girls varsity tennis team took first place at the Holly-Powers Invitational. Clarkston was in the finals for six of eight events.
April 23
Hall of Fame inducts Coach Richardson: Varsity Football Coach Kurt Richardson was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, April 19, at University of Michigan.
Richardson reflected on his 32 years coaching for the Wolves, his favorite memories and what being inducted meant to the Clarkston community.
April 30
Hitting first at tournament: The varsity boys baseball team won the the Chippewa Valley tournament. They beat three teams from Berkley, Warren Woods Tower, and Chippewa Valley to take top honors.
May 14
Undefeated on the links: Golfers from the boys varsity team defeated six teams during the season and then beat them again during the OAA Red league meet tournament and took first place.
Lady Wolves take1st in St Clair tourney: During the tournament the girls varsity softball team batted a home run and grand slam for first place. They beat three teams.
May 28
The boys lacrosse team used the first two minutes in overtime to beat Huron Valley Lakeland in the first round of regionals, 6-5. The boys lost the second game in regionals agains University of Detroit – Jesuit, 17-3.
League champs: Golfers secured their league title after beating Waterford in their last match. The boys also placed in fifth at their division match to go on to regionals.
They placed in sixth during regionals.
Runners place at meet: Girls Track took second place at the Oakland County Championship with 54 points. The boys team tied for 16th place with Farmington Harrison with 14 points.
Placing in the top six: Autumn Touchstone, first in 300 hurdles, second in 100 hurdles, and sixth in long jump; Stephanie Thorstad, second in high jump; Kristen Smith, second in 1600 meter run; and Erik Thompson, third in long jump.
Girls tennis taking on states: For the fourth consecutive year, the varsity girls tennis team will be making an appearance at the state playoffs. The girls came in fourth place with 18 points during the regional competition on May 15.
June 4
Four runners take All-State: The girls track team placed in 11th as a team at states and four members placed individually. Stephanie Thorstad, Autumn Touchstone. Kristen Smith, Dana Johns.
Players make top eight in states: Girls varsity tennis players took eighth against 21 teams at states.
June 11
Runners find success at county meet: The boys from Clarkston Junior High School worked together to beat Avondale Middle by one point to take first-place honors in the biggest track county meet in the state. They earned 62 points in the Oakland County seventh and eighth grade meet.
The boys and girls teams ended their season undefeated, 8-0.
Wolves take their game on the road
Quite a few Wolves continued on after graduating last summer. We were there as they signed on to their future.
Oliver Kupe signed his letter of intent to play soccer for Northwestern.
Alyssa Vela signed to continue her swimming career as a Grizzly at Oakland University.
Jaclyn Otto also chose to stay close to home and signed on to play basketball at Rochester University.
Also, from the girls basketball program Taylor Daugherty signed to Albion College and Alyssa Swindlehurst to Oakland Community College, and Jennifer Johnston to Tiffin University.
