For kids who are disappointed that they have to wait until 18 to vote, the Oxford Public Library is offering a nice consolation prize.
From Oct. 27 until Nov. 4, the library is offering kids an opportunity to cast their ballot in a different kind of election. They’ll get to vote for their favorite author, favorite book genre and favorite book series.
This is the first year this election is being held. Sian Marshall, who works in the library’s Youth Services, said that talking about the elections this year generated this idea, as well of using the power of the ballot to encourage kids to read while getting them involved in the voting process.
‘We’re linking it to books and are hoping to get kids interested in reading,? Marshall said. ‘They might see something on the ballot they haven’t read and it might encourage them to look further into it and try out a different author.?
Kids like to do things at the library, Marshall explained, and when their opinion counts, it makes them feel important.
