Young runners earn medals, respect in Rochester tourney

Freshmen and sophomore cross country runners from Oxford received medals and a trophy at the Oct. 20 Rochester Freshman Sophomore tournament in Rochester’s Bloomer Park.
The cross country boys finished third out of 13 schools and earned a trophy while the girls finished fifth out of 11 schools. Six runners (three for the boys and three for the girls) came away with medals as being among the top 30 finishers.
For the boys, they finished as follows: Dylan Smith, seventh place at 18 minutes; Nolan Salani, 17, 18:55; Alec Smith, 27, 19:05.
Also running for the boys were Shane Kerbelis, with a time of 19:25; Brent Womble, 20:24; Garrett Kovacic, 19:54; Doug Chowanic, 19:59; Kyle Feeney, 20:47; Dwight Merrill, 21:00; Ryan Brendle, 21:22; Zack Alder, 21:45; Marshall Versteeg, 24:09.
?[The boys] passed four or five runners in the last few hundred yards to move up and get the trophy and edge out the fourth-place team by two points,? said Cross Country Head Coach Ray Sutherland.
For the girls, Megan Seeley finished 15th with a time of 22:00; Jillian Walker, 23, 22:25; Olivia Hernandez, 27, 22:43; Brie Barry, 34, 23:28; Mallory Skilling 40, 23:54; Sam Murphy, 48, 24:27; Kasey Smith, 56, 25:16.
