Jordan Zendejas jumped into the swimming pool with the rest of his teammates Friday night in celebration of winning their OAA II league meet.
Clarkston took first place after scoring 345 points after three days of competition.
For Zendejas, the night brought a personal victory. He set a new pool record for one meter diving. He scored a total score of 354.25 points, from 11 dives from the preliminaries on Thursday and finals on Friday.
‘My heart was beating so fast,? said Zendejas as he heard his score. ‘It was great.?
‘I thought I would jump and down and cheer,? said his brother, Joe Zendejas. ‘But I cried.?
Jordan had a goal to beat Grayson LaHousse’s record of 220.35 points, a score from a combination from six dives. The record was set in 2003.
Jordan worked hard towards the goal by practicing during the girls? fall season.
His parents, Kelly and Marco Zendejas were his biggest supporters during his journey and were there on Friday to watch Jordan set the new pool record and new team record.
Jordan said he owed his success to his parents.
Setting the record qualified Jordan for the state competition next week.
Also, qualifying for the state competition in their individual events were Jake Rush (100 yard backstroke), Greg Dedow (200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle), and Adam Curry (50 yard freestyle).
Two relay teams qualified for states and set a new school record on Friday.
Bobby Nelson, Philip Voorheis, Kenneth Stepflug in 400 yard freestyle relay (3:24.63); and Nelson, Stelpflug, Rush, and Dedow in 200 freestyle relay (1:45.39).
‘We have never sent a relay team to states,? said coach Kenwyn Chock.
Also to set school records were, Dedow in 200 yard freestyle (1.50.00) and 500 yard freestyle (4:57.27) during the preliminaries; and Curry in 50 yard freestyle during the final day (22.88).
‘It was great. A total team effort,? said Chock.
This year marked the first time the boys and girls team took first place at the league meet.
‘It shows the program has taken a step forward,? said Chock. ‘The program is getting competitive.?

In 200 yard freestyle event, Dedow took fourth (1:51.17), and Stelpflug in fifth place (1:51.28); 200 yard IM, Nelson in fifth (2:09.31), Voorheis in sixth (2:09.4);
50 yard freestyle, Rush in fourth (23.45); 100 yard butterfly, Voorheis in ninth (57.72) Eric Leady in tenth (59.87); 100 yard freestyle, Curry in fifth (51.00) and Stelpflug in sixth (51.46); 100 yard backstroke, Nelson in fourth (1:06.37), Inch in fifth (1:07.45).
Pool records were set by competing schools. Matt Lederer from Harrison-Farmington set a new pool record in100 yard freestyle (48.29) and the relay team from North Farmington in 200 yard freestyle relay (1:31.52).
Diving regionals are next Tuesday.
State final for division one. It will be at Oakland University next Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8.
