Team falls, but 6 go on to state

Seniors Bryant Craft and Adam Lauzun fought hard, but their scores came too late to help the team beat Hartland last Wednesday.
In the first round at the regional match, Clarkston lost to ranked fifth Hartland, 33-24.
‘We didn’t do well and we lost,? said coach Joe DeGain.
‘I think that they can all go out there to wrestle to win. Some chose to wrestle not to lose. They didn’t wrestle to win that’s what it comes down to.?
Hartland started a streak in their first four matches scoring against Clarkston.
Matt Dietz (125) was tied with Doug Baughman, putting them in overtime. Dietz scored two points in the overtime, putting the Wolves on the board, 17-3.
Next to the mat was Alex Popp (130). He defeated Derek Sawyer in scoring the most points.
Chris Burkhart (140), Bryant Craft (171), Sloan Hadsall (189) and Adam Lauzun (215) defeated their Hartland opponents to bring the score up to 33-24.
Novi Catholic Central beat Holly 51-15.
Hartland continued on the rest of the meet and beat Novi Catholic Central, 39-33.
‘I think if we wrestle to win and wrestle like it isn’t our last one, our guys will be just fine,? said DeGain before going into the individual match on Saturday.
‘If we wrestle like it is our last match, I think it will continue to haunt us like it did tonight.?
Eight wrestlers went to the regional individual meet on Saturday.
Matt Vandermeer (152) lost in his first match, ending his season with a record of 27-14.
Mike Richmond also lost in his first match, ending the season, 24-12.
The other six qualified for the state finals starting next month.
Lauzun (171) was champion after defeating Matt Skrzpczak from Bay City Central, 9-4, bringing his record.
Placing in second place was Deitz, Popp, and Craft.
Evan King (145) and Hadsall (215) took fourth.
The qualifiers will begin the first round of Individual State Finals on Thursday, March 6 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
