Goodrich – Spend a morning with the children’s symphony orchestra and learn about the instruments they play in a special performance at the high school.
More than 70 Flint Youth Symphony (FYSO) students, ranging in age from 13 to 18, will perform a children’s concert at 10 a.m., Jan. 26, at the Raymond C. Green Center for the Performing Arts, 8029 South Gale Road.
This event is part of the Fine Arts: a Mainstream in Education (FAME) by Goodrich Schools.
Immediately following the concert, children will have the opportunity to try out a variety of string, wind and brass instruments. Children from the orchestra, along with students and instructors from the Flint School of Performing Arts, will be there to demonstrate and assist children in playing instruments.
The orchestra’s conductor, Davin Pierson Torre said it will be an out of the ordinary event. ‘There are not enough opportunities for families to get up close with symphony orchestras in general, much less a youth orchestra,? said Torre. From the symphony’s perspective, the orchestra will enjoy the opportunity to perform for younger children who are potential musicians. It will be youth performing for youth.?
Torre said many of the instruments will be spotlighted and will have a special part to play. ‘When we play the ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,? children will recognize the bassoon from cartoons,? she said.
The commitment is great, but Torre said the reward is big.
Former members of the youth symphony have gone on to play with the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Traveling abroad is another bonus. Preparing for their concert tour in Lyon and Paris, France, Torre said the FYSO will perform there from March 28 through April 5.
‘This area is musically very rich. It has excellent bands and excellent music programs. So we supplement that to give the opportunity for a full orchestra, including string instruments. This gives kids another opportunity meant to supplement their school program,? said Torre.
