Locals to showcase their talent this weekend

This Saturday, residents from Oxford, Lake Orion and other communities will release their inner star at the Upland Hills Community Showcase at the Karen Joy Theatre.
Oxford resident Phil Moore and Lake Orion resident Joe Tackett will perform with the band Phil ‘n the Blanks, while Oxford resident Matthew Long and Lake Orion resident Cathy Zucker will have solo performances.
Other bands performing are Grey Curtain and Don’t Mind Us, which is a blended group of young adults with disabilities and other local musicians.
Band member Kate Gardner is an alumnus of Upland Hills School and visits the school often to share her voice.
Don’t Mind Us plays a mix of original tunes, Motown, oldies and recent pop music and has performed at the Whispering Trails Summer Music Camp, the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center and Community Mental Health of Oakland County.
The performances will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by live Contra Dance caller Glen Morningstar.
Contra dancing is when a caller, usually working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Call (248) 693-2878, or visit www.karenjoytheatre.org and download a mail-in order form for tickets.
The theatre is located at 2575 Indian Lake Road on the campus of Upland Hills in Lake Orion.
