~~~Several summer camps were held across Orion as many older locals experienced big moments, too, including college baseball players Nate Recknagel (regional MVP at Michigan) and Neil Medchill (Junior College All-American at Chandler-Gilbert) and pro golfer Tom Gillis (made cut at Buick Open).
~~~Over 90 teams competed in the AAU 15-under Boys Basketball National Championships, held in Lake Orion. An Oakland County team, which included LO’s Derek Coe, won the ‘Classic Bracket.? Meanwhile, the Michigan Shock, a 16-under girls AAU team featuring current LOHS players Cara Booker, Trisha Dalrymple and Cortney Kimmel, finished 11th at the Junior Division II National Championships.
~~~A group of over 50 female supporters attended the first annual Women’s Football 101 Camp at LOHS. The camp raised funds for the PEPP and Dragon GAP Clubs.

~~~Golfer and recent LOHS grad Britney Hamilton placed third at the Golf Association of Michigan’s Women’s Championship. Several current LOHS golfers, including Cameron Beeler, Andy Bogus and Maggie Hughes, and recent grad Megan Clemence, all competed in the Top 50 Junior Tour State Championships.
~~~Lake Orion Hanson’s Running Shop Manager Yolanda Flamino returned home after breaking the women’s course record at the San Francisco Marathon by more than 11 minutes.
~~~The Lake Orion football squad survived a scare and opened their 2007 campaign with a comeback victory against visiting Oak Park, 34-25.

~~~The football squad lost 31-13 at Troy, but, more importantly, lost quarterback Chris Lum to a left elbow-injury. Lum missed the next six games, with Ryan Broth taking the reins at quarterback.
~~~Fourteen-year-old Cristi Fisher competed with a broken foot and helped her team from the Tina Marie School of Dance win the national championship.
~~~Lake Orion resident Carol Davis, who has rolled three 300-games in her career, was inducted into the Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame.

~~~The football squad won their 20th consecutive homecoming game with 28-6 victory over Pontiac Northern. Though the team lost to Clarkston the following week, they qualified for the playoffs with a 26-0 win over West Bloomfield.
~~~The volleyball team rolled through the OAA II tournament to claim the league championship. The team was one of four regular season co-champions, but didn’t drop a single match in the day-long tournament at LOHS.
~~~Clarkston came back from a halftime deficit to top Lake Orion 4-3 in a district final soccer game at LOHS. The Dragons had won two games earlier in the week to advance to the final.
~~~The boys? cross country team, which lost co-captain Josh Schrauger to a tragic accident earlier in the month (see Top Stories in this web edition), rebounded to claim a share of the OAA I crown. The girls? squad finished fifth.

~~~The football team avenged an earlier loss to Clarkston and beat the host Wolves 30-27 in a district final. The team lost to eventual state champion Macomb Dakota 26-14 the following week in a regional final.
~~~Both cross country teams placed in the state’s top-15. The boys placed eighth, led by Ryan Ziolko’s second-straight All-State performance. The girls finished 13th, led by Allie Hock’s third-straight trip to the All-State team.
~~~The girls? swim squad placed third at the OAA II league meet (won by Clarkston). The 400-free relay team of Nicole Kudla, Sara Simic, Chrissie Forrest and Emily Loerch placed 16th at the state meet later in the month.
~~~Indianwood Golf and Country Club and the United States Golf Association announced plans to hold the 2012 U.S. Senior Open on the old course.

~~~Playing in the winter for the first time, the girls? basketball team opened their season with a 7-0 start that included a 58-50 win over league rival Stoney Creek.
~~~The boys? basketball squad began defense of their OAA II crown with wins over three league foes, including an impressive 67-62 victory over Southfield.
~~~For the first time since 1989, the LOHS wrestling squad captured the Oakland County Championship. The team was led by individual winners Jake Varilek and Doug Mack.
~~~The cheerleading and ski squads (both boys? and girls?) opened their seasons among the state’s most highly touted teams, the boys? swim team started with three straight wins and the hockey squad saw some positive returns as they began their first season in the OAA I.

Lake Orion sports year in review
January
~~~The Lake Orion boys? basketball and hockey squads raced out to early leads in their respective leagues, with an 8-3 record on the hardwood and 12-3-1 mark on the ice.
~~~The Dragons cheerleading team finished third at their home invitational, behind Grandville and Rochester. The competition was one of the state’s largest and featured six top-10 teams.
February
~~~Lake Orion hosted teams from across the county for the boys? swimming and diving meet, which featured a showdown between LO’s Ricky Forrest and Seaholm’s Morgan Priestley in the 500-free. Priestley won, but both swimmers shattered the pool record. Dragon diver Brandon Figurski blew away the competition in his event.
~~~Both the volleyball and wrestling squads from LOHS took second at their respective league tournaments, leaving both with second place finishes in the overall league standings (volleyball in the OAA II and wrestling in the OAA I).
~~~The cheerleading squad used a stellar third-round routine (316 points) to top Rochester in the OAA I league meet and tie the top-ranked Falcons for the overall league title.
~~~The wrestling squad topped Adams to avenge a regular season loss and capture a district championship. The basketball and hockey squads, meanwhile, clinched their respective league crowns, both with a couple of league games still to play.
~~~The girls? ski squad took seventh at states, led by Emily Loerch’s 21st place finish in the giant slalom, while the girls? bowling squad, led by two-time individual state qualifier Kelly Skarritt, qualified for the state meet in just their second year as an official varsity sport.
March
~~~The girls? bowling squad finished 12th in the state, while the hockey squad advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history, where they fell to East Kentwood 1-0.
~~~The cheer squad finished sixth in the state, with Rochester capturing their third straight title.
~~~Figurski and Forrest both brought home state titles in the pool, while three wrestlers placed at the state meet, including Jake Varilek in fourth place at 152-pounds.
~~~The basketball squad fell 54-47 to Clarkston in a district final, marking the second year in a row that the Wolves edged host Lake Orion in a district title tilt.
~~~Basketball star Drew Maynard announced his intention to attend Oakland University, choosing the local school over a list that included Kent State and MSU.
April
~~~A nearly nine-year lawsuit came to a close, resulting in six sports changing seasons at the high school level, including volleyball, girls basketball, and both boys and girls tennis and golf.
~~~The first-ever lacrosse season started at Lake Orion, with 60 players turning out for the inaugural boys? squad.
~~~The baseball squad from LOHS went undefeated in the month, winning all 11 of their games and earning the top spot in the state rankings.
May
~~~The streak for the baseball team ended at a record 14 games with a 14-2 loss to Farmington, resulting in a split in the regular season series with the Falcons.
~~~The boys? track team took fourth at the OAA I league meet, while the girls? squad finished seventh.
~~~The third-ranked girls? golf squad finished second at the regional they hosted at Boulder Pointe, qualifying the team for the state finals in Lansing. Coach Megan Daly was named regional coach of the year.
June
~~~The golf squad won the second state title in school history, distancing themselves from the field by 21 strokes in the two-day event. Seniors Britney Hamilton and Darby Peters tied for fifth overall.
~~~Both the soccer and softball squads advanced to district final games before their respective seasons ended. On the diamond the girls fell to Romeo 7-3, while on the pitch the Dragons lost 4-0 to top-ranked (and eventual state runner-up Rochester).
~~~The baseball squad started their playoff run with a district title, sweeping a doubleheader with Oxford (2-0) and Romeo (13-0). The team then won a regional crown with victories over Utica Ford (9-2) and Troy Athens (5-2).
~~~The baseball team finally gets over the quarterfinal hump with a 3-2 win over West Bloomfield to advance to Battle Creek. The team topped Brighton 4-0 in the semis, securing a rematch with Farmington in the finals.
~~~Nick Dunstan’s walk-off single scores Joe Barnes and gives Lake Orion its second title in just two weeks with a 4-3 victory over Farmington.
~~~Barnes and teammate Josh Deeg are named to the Division I All-State First Team and Coach Andy Schramek is named coach of the year. In golf, Hamilton and Peters are First Team selections.
