Gallery owner shares her natural side

Usually, Margot VanHorn is the one exhibiting other artist’s work at her gallery in downtown Oxford.
But now, her personal work will be featured in two art shows in Birmingham.
From Oct. 18-20, three of VanHorn’s acrylic paintings will be on display at the Birmingham Community House for their Our Town All-Media Show and Sale.
Her painting of a frog entitled ‘Frog on a Big Leaf,? an iris, called ‘H for Iris,? and a tree painting entitled ‘Evening,? were selected to make their debut.
‘I was jumping up and down,? she said about being selected into the show. ‘I think it’s really an honor to have three (pieces) in there.?
Starting last Friday, VanHorn’s colored pencil and pen drawing of a secada, entitled ‘Penland Bug,? will be on display at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) until Nov. 9 for their 50th anniversary.
VanHorn, who’s been an artist all her life, served as a faculty member six years ago, where she taught how to use colored pencils for drawing.
She said she loves using the theme of nature in her paintings.
‘I think we really, really need to pay much more attention to (the environment) than other things that we do,? she said. ‘I try to make a point of that with my paintings.?
The Birmingham Community House is located at 380 S. Bates St. in Birmingham. The BBAC is located at 1516 Cranbrook Rd. in Birmingham.
