When Tiffany Weber-Phillips graduated from Lake Orion High School in 1990, she didn’t realize that she would be back one day to help make decisions regarding the district.
But as of July 1, that is exactly what she is doing as the newest member on the Lake Orion Board of Education.
With three children attending Lake Orion schools in the fall, Weber-Phillips will not only be helping make decisions regarding thousands of Orion students, but also decisions that affect her children.
‘We’ve had a great experience in the school district,? Weber-Phillips said. ‘We knew we wanted our kids there. It’s a good school system.?
Weber-Phillips and her husband of 13 years, Matt, have three children, Gabrielle, 8, and twins Cole and Conner, 5. Gabrielle attends Stadium Elementary and the twins will begin school at Pine Tree Elementary in the fall.
‘I’m very excited for my boys to start and they’re very excited to start,? she said of Cole and Conner. ‘It’s a countdown at our house right now.?
Both the kids and her husband are excited for her role on the board.
‘Gabby is very excited,? Weber-Phillips said of her eldest. ‘She understands a little more. There is a student council that she’s involved with at her school, so she’s had an introduction to politics and leadership.?
Weber-Phillips, who works in real estate, has a background in finance and has also worked in human resources. Having been working in a professional sense since she received her undergrad (she has also received a MBA from Oakland University), she hopes to bring that experience into her new role as a school board member.
‘Now, it’s a matter of getting reintroduced to Lake Orion’s way of business and the procedures,? said Weber-Phillips, who will be serving as one of the board representatives on the finance committee.
She described ‘the opportunity to learn more about the schools and making decisions on behalf of the students? as the items that she is most looking forward to as a board member. Budget issues and disciplinary items will be her least favorite.
She is also looking forward to participating in graduation activities, as well as Lamp of Learning and other ceremonies that the school board takes part in.
‘It took awhile to realize that I am part of this group,? Weber-Phillips said of the board. ‘They’re a wonderful group of individuals and I’m excited to be a fellow board member.?
‘They work really well together and I’m excited about the new leadership and what it will mean for the students of Lake Orion in the future,? she added.
Weber-Phillips describes herself as an ‘approachable? person.
‘If anyone ever has a question, feel free to get a hold of me anytime,? she said.
Having sat in her first official meeting last week, Weber-Phillips is excited to get started and thanks all those that helped get her there.
‘I want to say thank you for the support I received in the community and I’m honored to serve as a representative of the schools,? she added.
