Scholarship

Atlas Twp.- The Atlas Township Firefighter’s Association presented their first scholarship to a recent Goodrich High School graduate.
James Armstrong was awarded $250 with the first gift of what is hoped to become an annual scholarship, said Tom Westerlund, president of the association.
‘We’ve been thinking about this for the last year or so, trying to give back to the community some more. We thought this would be a good way to help some high school kids that need extra money for college,? said Westerlund, a lieutenant in the department.
Goodrich High School students with a grade point average of 2.0-3.0 were eligible for the scholarship.
Westerlund said money for the scholarship was collected through fundraisers selling address signs throughout the area. Signs are $22 and are available by contacting the township hall, (810) 636-2548.
‘One hundred percent of the profit,? said Westerlund, ‘goes to giving back to the community? like this scholarship.?
