Braking required

Students in Daniel Balsley’s Auto Technology Class got down and dirty last Thursday at the annual Oxford High School Brake Competition.
Students spent 80 minutes completely disassembling and reassembling the rear drum brakes on at least two different vehicles. Their goal was to get the fastest time possible.
Under the watchful eye of a judge with a stopwatch, the two best times on both vehicles are averaged together to determine the top three winning groups.
Although students? fast fingers are key to the competition, they must be accurate too.
First place winners this year were Cody McKay and Steven Walker with an average time of 2 minutes, 46 seconds.
Second place winners were Justin Hickmott and Steve Hassenzahl with their average time of 3 minutes, 36 seconds.
Third place went to Brian Soutarand Nick Rourke for their average time of 5 minutes, 30 seconds.
‘The competition ran very smoothly,? Balsley said. ‘The kids were very excited and enjoyed the competition.?
Winners received prizes donated from local sponsors ? Rotary Club of Oxford, Oxford Bank, Oxford NAPA, Wright Tool Co., Steve’s Auto Parts and the Oxford McDonald’s.’Staff Writer, Casey Curtis.
