Goodrich cagers earn decisive wins in two league games

Goodrich’s varsity boys basketball team is off to an undefeated start in Genesee Area Conference Red Division play.
The Martians soundly defeated host Genesee 86-55 in a Dec. 12 contest, improving to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. A total of 13 Martians scored at least two points apiece in the contest, with a different player seemingly carrying the scoring load each quarter.
Jake McGinnis was the catalyst for the Martians in the first quarter, scoring seven points as Goodrich raced out to a 23-11 lead. In the second quarter, it was Andrew Patrick’s turn to shine. Patrick scored nine of his team-leading 15 points in that period as Goodrich increased their lead to 48-25 at halftime.
Dan Eisinger took control in the third period, scoring 10 of his 12 points as Goodrich furthered its lead to 71-42.
In addition to Patrick and Eisinger, Dan Johns was the other Martian to score in double figures with 10 points. Johns also led the team with 12 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.
Senior Jacob Smigiel scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Martians won their GAC Red opener 80-58 against host Montrose Dec. 8.
In the first quarter, sophomore Caleb Jones scored seven points as the Martians raced out to a 21-10 halftime lead. Although the Rams tried to keep pace in the second quarter, the Martians still maintained an 11-point lead, 37-26, at halftime.
Once the game reached the fourth quarter, Smigiel and sophomore Robert Short both delivered from the free-throw line for the Martians. Smigiel made nine-of-10 free throw shots in the period, while Short was six-of-six down the stretch.
As a team, the Martians converted 26-of-38 free throws (68.4 percent), while Montrose connected on 15-of-26 free throws (57.7 percent).
In addition to Smigiel’s 23 points, Jones and senior Matt Christensen added nine points each for the Martians, while junior Jake McGinnis led the team with 12 rebounds.
Preston Taylor scored 12 points for Montrose in a losing cause.
The Martians were scheduled to play Atherton in a Dec. 15 home game. Their last regularly scheduled game before the Christmas break is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, when they travel to New Lothrop.
Goodrich’s first scheduled game in 2007 is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, when they host Grand Blanc.
