Six Goodrich wrestlers place first as Martians win tourney

Goodrich’s wrestling team proved itself a force to be reckoned with at the Caro Tournament Saturday, Dec. 9.
The Martians earned six first-place finishes on their way to capturing the 28th annual tournament with 203 points. Host Caro, which had four first-place finishers, was runner-up with 162 points, while Perry was third with 143.
Goodrich’s six first-place finishers were C.C. Weber (103), David Garr (112), Kirk Britton (119), Mark Weber (130), Grant Overcashier (135) and Kyler Elsworth (171).
C.C. Weber pinned Ray Cloutier of Okemos in 3:18 to win the 103 pound finals; Garr pinned Nick Wenger of Saginaw Heritage in 4:51 to win at 112; Britton defeated Vassar’s Mike Endert 8-6 to win at 119; Mark Weber defeated Perry’s Jon Coy by a 15-5 major decision to win at 130; Overcashier defeated Erie Mason’s Jordan Dusseall 7-5 to win at 135; and Elsworth defeated Bridgeport’s Corey Moore 6-2 to win at 171.
In addition, two Goodrich wrestlers finished in second place at the tournament, Brad Armstrong (160) and Kyle March (171). Two other Martians, Joe Hopkins (third place, 152) and Nick Gatchell (fourth place, 140), placed at the tournament.
Three days earlier, the Martians defeated host Lapeer West 42-27 and Kearsley 62-17 in a nonleague matchup.
Four Martians earned pinfall victories against Lapeer West. Mark Weber (130) pinned Logan King in 2:20; Overcashier (135) pinned Stuart Allen in 2:22; Gatchell (140) pinned Andrew Burgett in 1:33; and Britton (119) pinned Nick Fason in 1:34.
Against Kearsley, nine Martians earned pinfall victories: Mark Weber (130) pinned Jake Fuller in :34; Gatchell (140) pinned Troy Root in 4:46; Weil (145) pinned Kris Durant in :23, Hopkins (152) pinned Rich Burke in 1:26; Armstrong (160) pinned Tim Sparks in 3:01; Elsworth (171) pinned Josh Diehl in 3:44; C.C. Weber (103) pinned Tyler Webb in 2:55; Garr (112) pinned Sam Wylie in 2:54; and Britton (119) pinned Josh Fuester in 2:54.
The Martians were scheduled to compete in the Genesee County Tournament Saturday, Dec. 16 at Davison. Goodrich then has a nearly two-week break before their next meet, when they are scheduled to host the annual Goodrich Wrestling Tournament of Champions beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29.
