By more than a 2-1 margin, voters said no to bond and millage proposals for a new tri-township senior center.
On the bond proposal to borrow $5.95 million for up to 20 years for an older persons? building, ‘no? votes totaled 9,341, or 67 percent, while 4,324 voted in favor.
When asked to add 0.25 mill for 10 years for the building, the no votes came in at 70 percent, or 9,604 votes, with 4,175 voting in favor .
The two proposals failed by similar margins in Addison and Oxford townships, though it needed to fail in only one of the three communities for the project to be halted.
Orion Township Trustee and election worker Matthew Gibb reported that voter turnout was good, despite a steady election day rainfall.
About 47 percent of the township’s registered voters went to the polls, a significant turnout in an off-year election, officials said.
Opponents of the proposal cited the project’s cost and a slow economy for the defeat.
