League champion Martians rolling as districts await

Goodrich’s varsity girls basketball team continues to steamroll its competition with districts about a week away.
In a Genesee Area Conference home game Oct. 31 at Goodrich, the GAC Red Division champion Martians soundly defeated Montrose 65-30, improving to 15-2 overall and 13-1 in the league. The Martians clinched the league title outright with a 64-22 win against LakeVille Oct. 26.
Three Martians scored in double figures in the contest. Kortni Elsworth led the way with 13 points, while Autumn Haggadone added 11 and Brandi Kushuba 10.
Goodrich coach Jason Gray acknowledged he is ‘somewhat? concerned about the Martians not being challenged heading into districts, but a stretch of games the Martians played earlier this year helps him alleviate his concerns.
‘The way we played earlier this year, when we defeated Grand Blanc and New Lothrop, and played well in defeat against Hamady, has got me feeling better,? he said. ‘We did well against those teams. We can raise our level of play to the most elite teams.?
In the game against LakeVille five days earlier, Kortni Elsworth led the Martians with 17 points, while Ashley Short added nine. A total of 13 Martians scored during the game.
The Martians have one week left before the start of girls? basketball playoff action in the state of Michigan. Districts are scheduled to get underway Monday, Nov. 13, with Goodrich stationed in District 56-B, located in Richmond.
The Martians are in the same district as Almont, Armada, Capac, Imlay City and Richmond. Gray said he is the process of scouting the Martians? district opponents prior to the start of playoff action.
The Martians? first district game is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15 against the winner of the Richmond-Imlay City predistrict game.
