Brandon’s varsity girls basketball team was the beneficiary of a balanced attack Oct. 10 as the Blackhawks earned a second straight league win.
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead on their way to a 54-24 win against the visiting Holly Bronchos. Brandon improved to 8-3 overall and 7-2 in the Flint Metro League, while Holly fell to 1-11 overall and 0-9 in the league.
Brandon increased its lead to 31-9 at halftime, and never looked back.
Savannah Stedman led the Blackhawks with 13 points, while Kate Haas and Maria Schmidtke added nine points apiece and Ashlyn Skornicka contributed eight points.
On Oct. 5, the Blackhawks rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Clio Mustangs 39-28 in a league game.
The Blackhawks had trailed 17-14 at halftime before coming back to take a 28-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. Brandon then outscored the Mustangs 11-2 in the final period to put the game away.
Schmidtke posted a double-double for the Blackhawks with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Stedman added eight points.
As of press time, the Blackhawks are one game behind Fenton in the Flint Metro standings. The Tigers are currently 8-1 in the league after a 48-39 win against Lapeer West Oct. 10.
