Goodrich senior tennis captain Katie Bradley knew the Martians needed to raise money for the program.
However, she wanted to find a creative way to accomplish that objective.
‘We didn’t want to do your typical car wash or bake sale,? Bradley, 17, said. ‘We were talking to the guys at school, and they keep saying ‘We can beat you,? so we thought, ‘Let’s see if they can prove it.??
With that in mind, the team is sponsoring their first annual tennis challenge fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Goodrich High School Tennis Courts, 8029 S. Gale Road, Goodrich.
‘It will be a fun day,? Goodrich coach Renee Hand said.
For a $10 entrance fee per person, anyone in the community can team up with a friend and challenge any of the girls on the tennis team to a doubles match. For scheduling purposes, a match will be one set (first to six, win by two).
If the challenging team wins, they have the option of getting half their entrance fee back, or being put in the drawing to play Hand (and a partner of her choice) to win a gas card.
Hand said to the best of her knowledge, no other school in the area has used this fundraising method, and Bradley also said she doesn’t know of any other school holding such a fundraiser.
Taking into consideration how the Martians have done so far this year, going up against the girls in the tennis challenge will be a tough task for anyone participating in the event. The Martians have compiled a 4-2 record so far this season, including a 8-0 win against Mt. Morris Sept. 7.
Interested parties may fill out a registration form and return it to any of the girls tennis players or to the box in the high school office with payment by Tuesday, Sept. 19. The team will be creating a schedule and e-mailing everyone their approximate time on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Bradley said the team can accommodate up to 160 people who wish to take part in the fundraiser.
