The Michigan Department of Education has completed its ‘Education Yes!? grades for the district, with Reid and Oaktree Elementary Schools and Goodrich Middle School receiving ‘A’s and Goodrich High School receiving a ‘B?.
According to www.michigan.gov, ‘schools will now receive grades of A, B, C, D-Alert, or unaccredited under the new system. Every individual school building in Michigan will now receive seven letter grades, six individual grades – Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) achievement status, MEAP achievement change, MEAP achievement growth, indicators of engagement, indicators of instructional quality, and indicators of learning opportunities and an overall composite grade.?
Goodrich High School principal David St.Aubin said he did not feel the ‘B? grade accurately reflected the quality of the school.
‘Our staff works very hard, our kids work very hard’I’m not concerned about that,? said St. Aubin. ‘I’m concerned about how this is being seen by the public.?
St.Aubin said he considers GHS an ‘A? school and was disappointed that was not shown on the grade.
Despite not receiving a straight A’s from the state, superintendent Kim Hart said she was pleased with the performance of Goodrich Schools.
‘I think A’s and B’s are wonderful,? said Hart. ‘There’s always room for improvement, but I am very pleased with A’s and B’s.?
Hart added that things will look different next year as the MEAP (Michigan Education Assessment Program) test us replaced with the Michigan Merit Examination. The exchange of one test for the other will affect the way in which schools are evaluated, said Hart.
