Brandon’s varsity softball team used a combination of a potent offense and dominant pitching to earn a May 22 doubleheader sweep against Lapeer West.
The Blackhawks won the first game 9-0 and the nightcap 2-1, improving their record to 21-10-1 overall and 10-3-1 in the Flint Metro League.
In the opener, the Blackhawks benefited from the long ball, as Jennie Sherman and Asiah Lowe each had a home run and two RBI. Ashley Prescott and Brooke Schaefer each also drove in two runs.
Jill Perry shut down the Lapeer West bats, scattering four hits while striking out six.
The Blackhawks spotted the Panthers a run in the first inning of the second game before coming back to score one run each in the second and fifth innings. Perry again earned the win for the Blackhawks, striking out four.
The Blackhawks went 3-1 at the Tawas Invitational Saturday, May 20, losing a 3-2 eight-inning contest against Hemlock in the championship game. Sherman had two hits for the Blackhawks, including a home run, and drove in two runs.
Earlier in the tournament, the Blackhawks won two games by shutout, defeating St. Louis 14-0 and Standish 10-0. Against St. Louis, the Blackhawks scored in each of the game’s five innings, including six runs in the fifth inning.
Prescott went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Chelsea Wengren went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
The Blackhawks followed that up with a 10-0 win against Standish in a four-inning game. Jessica Liebner led the Brandon offense by going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Sherman went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
In a tighter contest, the Blackhawks defeated host Tawas 4-2, as they held off a late-inning rally by the Braves. Brandon scored twice in the first inning and once in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
