The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has approved the purchase of 63 acres of land in Orion Township.
The recommendation of the $1.83 million purchase was reported in The Review on Jan. 11.
‘It’s going to be a great addition to the state park,? said Paul Yauk from the DNR’s Parks and Recreation division.
‘It’s the high point in the area,? Yauk said. ‘You can see for miles from up there.?
Since the parcel falls some 90 feet down to Paint Creek, Yauk said stopping potentially harmful developments from coming into the parcel was a top priority.
Yauk also noted that the DNR hopes to get the public into the park to see the beautiful new addition.
‘It’s good for the state and for the community.?
The seller, Virginia Beraud, 86, will continue to maintain residence on a portion of the parcel, accessible from Kern Road.
The purchased land is surrounded on three sides by state land and has 1,200 feet of frontage on Kern.
