Martian cagers keep pace in GAC Red with defeat of Bentley

Bentley and Goodrich battled to a deadlock in the first quarter of their girls varsity basketball game Oct. 18 at Goodrich.
After that, it was all Martians, as Goodrich cruised to a 84-44 win in Genesee Area Conference play.
The Martians outscored the Bulldogs 26-10 in the second quarter to take a commanding 39-23 lead at halftime, and Goodrich never looked back. Kortni Elsworth keyed the Martians? efforts in the second quarter with eight points scored.
Elsworth led the Martians in scoring with 16 points and added four steals, while Autumn Haggadone added 14 points and eight rebounds. Paige Plant contributed 12 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line, and Ashley Short also chipped in with 12 points. Tara Garman tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
As a team, the Martians shot 26-of-39 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.
Suzie Jerisk led Bendle with 13 points, while Devon Bonham added 10 points.
The Martians received contributions from several key players in their 53-49 win against Bendle Oct. 13.
Bendle raced out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, as the Tigers? Jessica Trombley scored eight of her team-leading 14 points in that quarter.
However, keyed by Garman’s eight points in the second quarter, the Martians came back to narrow the gap to 30-27 at the half.
The Martians then put on the clamps defensively, outscoring the Tigers 14-6 in the third to take a 41-36 lead after the quarter. Elsworth helped the Martians? cause by shooting 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the third.
Haggadone led the team with 13 points and added nine rebounds (six offensive), while Garman added 10 points, 10 rebounds (six offensive) and five steals. Tubbs scored 11 points and had eight steals, and Elsworth chipped in with 10 points.
