The Brandon varsity soccer team mounted a comeback against Holly in their Oct. 17 contest, but it was not quite enough.
The Bronchos jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first half and held on for a 3-2 win against the Blackhawks in a Flint Metro League matchup. Brandon is now 8-5-2 overall and 6-4-2 in league play.
After Holly established their lead, Brandon came back in the second half, as Ryan Morales scored with about 32 minutes left in the half, and Nick Loeffler followed up with another goal with about 24 minutes left.
On Oct. 13, the Blackhawks defeated North Branch 3-0, as Morales, Chris Barth and Kyle Vallier scored goals. That win came following a 2-0 loss to Oxford the previous day.
Brandon had one regular season game remaining, Oct. 19 against Lapeer West, before the start of districts. The Blackhawks open district play Monday, Oct. 24 at Oxford when they take on the Wildcats. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Fowlerville-Auburn Hills Avondale game in the district semifinals Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Brandon coach Nathan Hunter said if the Blackhawks play up to their potential, they have a shot at defeating the Wildcats in their district opener.
‘I’m very optimistic about our team,? he said. ‘We’ve had some mental lapses and injuries that have caused us to lose some league games. I think we’ll go in 90 percent healthy. It’s a matter of mental preparation. If we come into the game wanting it badly enough, we should do well.?
