Goodrich’s varsity golf team fell short in its bid for another trip to the Division 3 state finals.
The Martians finished seventh in Division 3 regional action Oct. 7 at The Fortress in Frankenmuth, compiling a team score of 355. In order to advance to the state meet, teams must place in the top three at regionals.
Detroit Country Day finished first in the meet, while Flint Powers placed second and host Frankenmuth third. All three teams advanced to regional action, scheduled for Oct. 14-15.
Wes Coleman led the Martians with a round of 85, while Paul Bermudez added an 89. Matt Christensen (90), Caleb Jones (91) and Tyler Frantangelo (95) rounded out the Goodrich scoring.
Goodrich coach Doug Wilson said the Martians were dealing from inexperience this season, which made getting to the state finals a tough task.
‘We weren’t playing our best golf down the stretch, which is what you need to do to make it to the state finals,? he said. ‘The course was challenging, and the wind was blowing pretty good. I was disappointed, as were all the players, that we didn’t qualify, but I wasn’t disappointed in their lack of effort. It wasn’t meant to be this year.?
However, with Coleman the only Goodrich golfer graduating, Wilson said the Martians should be an improved team next year.
‘My expectations weren’t as high this year as in past years because of a lack of experience,? he said. ‘With everyone returning except Wes, the expectations will be much higher next year. If everyone steps up and improves, which they will because they have the desire to get better, the state finals will be a reachable goal.?
