It seems the Brandon varsity boys soccer team is making a habit of shutting out opposing teams.
After their first loss of the season Sept. 10, the Blackhawks recorded yet another shutout two days later.
The host Blackhawks defeated Lapeer East 1-0 in a Flint Metro League matchup Sept. 12, improving their record to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league competition.
Kyle Vallier scored the winning goal for the Blackhawks with about 20 minutes left in the second half, on an assist from Ryan Morales. Goalie Jerry Cronk stopped 16 Lapeer East shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Brandon coach Nathan Hunter said Cronk has worked very hard to get where he is today.
‘He’s just a tremendous athlete,? he said. ‘He has worked with great effort, and planning and preparation. I’m impressed with his professionalism. He has tremendous size and strength. He’s turned into one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen.?
In addition, Hunter said the Blackhawks as a team have displayed a superior attitude.
‘Our kids are working extremely well together,? he said. ‘They always support one another and demand the highest team effort.?
On Sept. 10, the Blackhawks dropped a 3-1 contest against visiting Rochester Stoney Creek.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first half before Morales knotted things up later in the half. However, two Stoney Creek goals in the second half made the difference in the game.
Hunter said the Blackhawks were up against a formidable foe in the Cougars.
‘We missed a couple of mark assignments,? Hunter said. ‘Stoney Creek is as good a team as there is in the state. They have good players at each position. We were pleased with our performance.?
