Goodrich’s varsity cheerleaders will be in a warm-weather location at the start of 2006.
The Martians will be performing at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Day, the second time in school history the Martians will be represented there (the first time was two years ago).
The squad, which is comprised of 17 members this season, earned that right by virtue of their performance at a cheerleading camp at Alma College this summer.
‘They take the best teams at the camp and invite them to the Capital One Bowl,? said Leslie Bauman, the team’s coach.
The Martians will be leaving for Orlando Dec. 29, and return Jan. 2-3, Bauman said. Two of the team’s parents, Lynette Germaine and Linda Ayotte, will be accompanying the Martians to the bowl game.
While Bauman said the trip to the Capital One Bowl is significant, the cheerleaders want to be known for their excellence every time they perform.
They showed signs of things to come on Feb. 19, the team won first place in the Fenton Powerhouse Championships with seven members.
Bauman hopes with the increase in team members to 17, the Martians will have a productive season.
‘We’re looking to be a lot more competitive this year,? she said.
Bauman also said fans are welcome to check the squad out this season at all Goodrich varsity home football games.
