The Lake Orion High School varsity girls soccer team has attained Academic All-State status for the third year in a row, finishing their 2005 season with a team grade point average of 3.62.
In order to be considered for Academic All-State, teams must maintain a GPA of at least 3.3.
The honor is awarded by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Michigan High School Coaches Association.
The Dragons were publicly recognized for their accomplishment by the Orion Township Board of Trustees at the Aug. 1 board meeting.
Team members received individual certificates during a pre-meeting ceremony, and were also introduced during the meeting by trustee John Steimel, who thanked them for providing a positive example for the community.
‘Besides representing us well as a sports team, what impressed me most was being recognized for being Academic All-State,? said Steimel, a soccer coach himself.
‘That took a lot of extra work…balancing sports and academics is very difficult,? he said. ‘You make us all very proud.?
Steimel also recognized head coach Ken Snage, and his assistant coaching staff: Randy McCoy, Kristie King, Cliff Selent and Jason Collinsworth.
The Lake Orion varsity girls finished this past season as district champions and were runners-up in the regional competition.
