Orion Library: High marks for services

Staff at Orion Township Library recently learned the library had achieved the Michigan Quality Services Checklist highest level of certification.
The library is only the second library in the state to achieve this status.
The Library of Michigan congratulated the library’s director board and staff for their demonstrated efforts to meet the needs of the community, stating ‘Excellent services are considered a stretch for any library and require funding and commitment at every level.?
Topics include Human Resources, Governance/Administration, Services, Collection Development, Technology/Facilities and Equipment, and Public Relations.
Required measurers under these topics include library assistance of staff and board and membership in professional organizations; assisting and encouraging staff to attend continuing education workshops; conducting community surveys to determine if the library is adequately serving its users.
Other measures included statewide automated interlibrary loan networks; community-wide book discussion programs; homebound deliveries; collection updated and weeded on a continual basis; in-library and remote access of library’s online public access catalog, meeting room for public use.
More kudos came the library’s way when the American Library Association awarded it the ‘Best of Show? award for outstanding Annual Report (2003) and honorable mention for the Library Link quarterly newsletter.
The awards will be presented at the ALA conference in Chicago later this monthly. Approximately 400 entries competed for these awards throughout the country.
