Despite sitting out the final event of the Mott Relays May 14, the Goodrich girls track team had just enough to emerge triumphant.
The Martian girls defeated Detroit Renaissance 89-85 in the relays, even though Goodrich did not have an entry in the 1,600 meter relay. Clarkston finished third (82).
Goodrich’s 6,400 relay team of Kaitlin O’Mara, Kayla O’Mara, Kelsey Meyers and Janee Jones captured that event with a time of 21:17.9, while Michelle Elliott notched the Martians? other first-place finish, winning the high jump (5?). Elliott also took second in the 100 hurdles (14.51) and third in the 300 hurdles (47.63).
The Martians were also helped by a strong showing in the 3,200 meters, with three girls finishing in the top six: Kaitlin O’Mara (second, 11:39.1); Kayla O’Mara (fifth, 11:48.05); and Meyers (sixth, 11:51.48).
Other Goodrich placers were: Andrea Howell in the pole vault (third, 7?6?); Christina Sweet in the pole vault (fourth, 7?6?) and the 400 meters (third, 1:03.79); Andrea Tubbs in the pole vault (eighth, 7?); Sarah Sweet in the discus (third, 108?8?) and shot put (sixth, 31?7-1/2?); and Jones in the 1,600 meters (second, 5:01.5).
The Goodrich boys team also competed at the meet, finishing in a tie for sixth with Detroit Cass Tech (33 points each). Grand Blanc won the meet with 137 points, while Lake Orion finished second (99) and Gary (Ind.) West Side third (84).
Kirk Elsworth notched the only first-place finish for the Martians, winning the long jump (20?1-1/2?).
