Goodrich’s track teams showed 13 other schools what they’re made of.
At the Goodrich Track Invitational May 6, the Martian boys and girls track teams each took first place by wide margins. The Martian boys defeated second-place Linden 123-77, while the Martians girls outdistanced second-place Brandon 165-107.
The Brandon boys squad had a solid day in their own right, finishing fourth with 56 points.
For the Blackhawk girls, the second-place finish marked the seventh time in the past nine years Brandon has finished either first or second at the Goodrich invite.
Coach Greg Hyde said the consistently large number of girls on the team has a lot to do with the Blackhawks? string of excellence.
‘We have a lot more talent going out for track than we used to,? he said. ‘We’ve had a number of kids come up from the middle school ranks to the high school.?
Goodrich’s boys team earned first place finishes in six different events ? four individual and two relays. Charlie Richards captured the 100 hurdles (15.2) and 300 hurdles (40.4), while Jeff Decator won the long jump (20?9.5?) and Mike Hanschmann finished first in the shot put (46?5?).
The Martians also captured second in four events: Ben Richards in the 1600 meters (4:36); Wayne Coulman in the 400 meters (52.4); Paul Burt in the high jump (5?10?) and the 400 relay (45.4).
Burt also finished third in the 100 hurdles (15.8), while Decator placed third in the 100 meter dash (11.2) and Andy Klumpp third in the high jump (5?8?).
The Blackhawk boys? squad nabbed three second-place finishes: Adam Hyde in the 300 hurdles (41.2), Kyle Worden in the discus (134?5?) and Steven Pierce in the pole vault (12?).
Hyde also earned fourth-place finishes in two other events: the 100 hurdles (15.9) and the 200 meters (24.5). Jason Ledgerwood took fourth in the high jump (5?8?), while the Blackhawks? 800 relay team (1:37.7) and the 1600 relay team (3:41) also finished fourth in their events.
The Martian girls finished first in nine different events ? six individual and three relay events.
Kayla O’Mara won the 800 meters (2:28.1) and the 3200 meters, while twin sister Kaitlin won the 1600 meters (5:22.9). Kortni Elsworth captured two events, the 100 meter dash (13.4) and the long jump (15?3?), while Michelle Elliott won the 100 meter hurdles (15.22).
Goodrich also took second in six different events. Mary Haiderer finished second in two of these events: the 1600 meters (5:27.1) and the 800 meters (2:30.1).
Brandon’s girls team set two new school records at the meet. Sarah Bond took first in the discus (119?), and Savannah Stedman won the high jump (5?3?). Bond also won the shot put (37?9?).
Elliott also placed third in the high jump (4?10?), while the Martians took third in the 400 relay (54.2).
The Blackhawks also took second place in two individual events and one relay event. Melissa McCarty finished second in the shot put (34?11?), while Angie Brooks took runner-up in the 100 meter dash (13.3). The 3200 meter relay team of Kelly Wilson, Danie Ashford, Jamie Hendershott, and Kayla Doan also took second in their event (10:19).
Doan also took third in the 1600 meter run (5:27), while Brooks placed third in the 200 meter dash (27.5) and Wilson third in the 3200 meter run (12:09).
