Brandon’s softball team is finding a way to win this year, whether it be a blowout or a close game.
The Blackhawks proved that point May 2 in a doubleheader against visiting Holly, taking the opener 12-1 and the nightcap 4-2. Brandon improved to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the Flint Metro League.
In the first game, the Blackhawks scored four runs each in the first, second, and fourth innings on the way to the win. Meridith Dura ignited the Brandon offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Lauren Ross scored three runs and Ashley Brady drove in four.
In the nightcap, the Blackhawks broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and held off the Bronchos for the win. Jessica Liebner drove in two of the Blackhawks? four runs.
Jill Perry was the winning pitcher in both games for the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks were also dominant in the Mason Invitational April 29, defeating Ovid-Elsie 8-0 and then host Mason 15-0 to win the tournament championship.
Perry pitched seven scoreless innings to defeat Ovid-Elsie in the opener, while Brady, Ross, and Jenni Sherman each tallied two hits. Ross and Sherman also had two RBI.
The Blackhawks wasted no time against Mason in the championship game, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. The game was halted after three innings due to the mercy rule.
Sherman drove in four Brandon runs to lead the Blackhawks? attack, while Annemarie Solley scored three runs.
Two days earlier, the Blackhawks swept Mt. Morris 17-1 and 10-0 in a doubleheader.
Brandon scored nine runs in the first inning and seven in the third in the opener. Brady led the Brandon charge with three hits, while Sherman and Chelsea Wengren drove in three runs each and Dura, Solley and Katie Flood score three runs each.
Jackie Wojtkowicz shut out Mt. Morris in the nightcap, working six innings for the win. Ross led the Brandon offense with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring two runs.
