Brandon residents attending or tuning into Detroit Shock home games this season will see one of their own in action.
Chelsea Buhler, 17, currently a junior at Brandon High School, made it through the selection process and is now a member of the Shock Wave, the dance team for the Shock, one of the teams in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
As a member of the dance team, Buhler will be taking part in all 17 Shock home games at The Palace of Auburn Hills, beginning with their Saturday, May 21 contest against Connecticut. In addition, the Shock Wave will perform at other public appearances and possible playoff games.
Buhler has plenty of dance experience through her tenure as captain of the BHS dance team, which performs at Brandon home varsity basketball games.
‘I heard about the tryouts through a competition I did,? she said. ‘I got a flyer in the mail.?
Auditions for the dance team were held April 11, and Buhler made it to the callback phase, which was held the following day. Following the second audition and interview phase, Buhler waited until a few days later, when she learned she had made the team.
Buhler said she tried out for the Shock Wave for ‘the experience to be on a professional dance team.? She began practicing with the team last week, and will be with the team through the remainder of the summer.
She said her family and friends are proud of her making the team. ‘They thought it was pretty cool ? most of them didn’t believe me at first,? Buhler said.
Buhler, the daughter of Pam and George Buhler of Ortonville, has one brother, George, 19. After she graduates from BHS, she hopes to study child psychology and dance at the University of Michigan.
