Both the Lake Orion girls and boys ski teams competed in their fifth state final in the past six years on Feb. 28 at Boyne Mountain.
The girls finished fourth, despite a fall by junior Kirsten Fleming in the slalom. Sitting in 10th place after her first run, Fleming fell out of medal contention on her second run.
However Fleming, the Dragons? top performer throughout the regular season, managed an 18th place finish in the giant slalom, to lead Lake Orion’s scoring.
Senior Jessica Hutchison managed a 19th place giant slalom finish, and a 24th slalom finish. Senior Katelyn Rivers finished 24th in the giant slalom and 26th in the slalom.
Sophomore Rachel Brown was 21st in the slalom.
The boys, finishing in ninth place out of nine teams, suffered a similar fate as the girls, when junior James Hubbard, also in the top-10 following his first slalom run, fell on his second run.
Although the youthful Dragons improved their performance in the giant slalom, it wasn’t enough to get into title contention.
Hubbard earned a ninth place medal in the giant slalom.
In the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association annual All-State selection on March 3, five Dragons were recognized with All State honors.
Hubbard was named to the Second Team Boys Class-A All State Giant Slalom Team.
Fleming was named to the Third Team Girls Class-A All State Giant Slalom Team.
Hutchison, Rivers and Brown were selected Class-A Girls All State Honorable Mentions.
