Despite Michael Skinner’s sharpshooting, Goodrich’s varsity boys basketball team couldn’t quite overtake Hamady in Genesee Area Conference action Feb. 8.
Deonte Williams led three Hamady players in double figures, scoring 20 points as the Hawks overcame a halftime deficit to defeat host Goodrich 61-58 on Feb. 8.
With the loss, the Martians dropped to 9-6 on the season.
Skinner was on fire from downtown throughout the contest, connecting on six three-point shots while scoring 23 points to lead the Martians.
He scored eight points while connecting on two three-point attempts in the first quarter as the Martians led 13-12 at the end of the first.
Skinner continued his torrid pace with two more three-point shots in the second quarter as the Martians claimed a 28-25 halftime lead.
However, the Hawks came roaring back in the third period, as Williams displayed some fine shooting of his own, scoring 10 points (including two three-point shots) in the third as Hamady took a 42-39 lead at the end of the period.
The Martians did their best to rally in the fourth, but the Hawks converted on 12-of-17 free throws (70.6 percent) in the final period to hold on for the win.
Skinner pulled down five rebounds to help the Goodrich cause, while Andy Klumpp had another solid game with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Elsworth added 13 points and six rebounds for the Martians.
Marcus Coleman scored 13 points for the Hawks, while Terrence George added 11 points.
Against visiting Atherton Feb. 4, Goodrich was ahead 33-29 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines outscored the Martians 17-9 in the final period to earn a 46-42 victory in a nonleague game.
Once again, Skinner’s sharpshooting helped the Martians take a commanding 14-6 lead after the first quarter. Skinner had 10 of his 12 points in the first. Goodrich held that eight-point margin, 24-16, at halftime.
Things started to unravel for the Martians in the third, as the Wolverines outscored the Martians 13-9 in that period. Goodrich maintained a 33-29 advantage at the end of the third .
However, Atherton’s Jason Smith scored seven of his nine points in the final quarter to help lead the Wolverines? comeback. Atherton shot 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help their cause.
Klumpp led the Martians in scoring with 15 points, while Elsworth added eight. Guy Bragg led Atherton with 17 points.
