Goodrich student Alex King is taking part in a international amateur athletic event later this summer.
King, 15, who will be a sophomore at Goodrich High School this coming year, is scheduled to take part in the skeet shooting competition at the CANUSA Games Aug. 11-13 in Flint. The games are alternated each year between Flint and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In order to qualify for the games, Alex King took part in a CANUSA Games qualifying event Sunday, July 16 at Grand Blanc Huntsman’s Club, 9046 South Irish Road, Grand Blanc. King, who was one of 39 participants at the competition, hit 83 of 100 targets.
King also took part in the Goodrich skeet shooting club during its fledgling season this year. The highlight of his season came June 24 when he hit 88 of 100 targets at the state tournament, which took place at the Detroit Sportsman’s Congress, located on Dequindre Road between M-59 and 23 Mile Road in Shelby Township.
He said skeet shooting is a good sport for people of all ages. ‘You can do it when you’re young and when you get older, you can still do it,? he said. ‘It’s fun.?
Stephanie explained due to Alex’s excellent performance in the qualifying meet, his baseball cap was sacrificed as part of a tradition in skeet shooting.
She said when a shooter hits their first 25 shots, which is a perfect round, the shooter fills his baseball cap with clay targets, tosses it in the air, and all the guys on the range take aim at the cap with their shotguns.
