Despite losing to the Clarkston Wolves in a close Division I quarterfinal game on June 15, the Lake Orion High School varsity softball team still had their best season in school history, finishing 30-9.
The Wolves took what turned out to be the Dragons? final game by a score of 3-2, and traveled to the state semifinals for the first time in their school history.
Lake Orion’s Bristel Brumitt hit a homerun in the seventh inning, her fourth of the year, and finished the game with two hits.
Lauren LaPine, Nichole Woityra and Lisa McDonald each finished with one hit for the Dragons.
Lake Orion pitcher Robin Roe had five strikeouts in the game. Lake Orion graduated two seniors from this year’s squad.
Woityra was named to the All Region team this year, and coach Denny Davis said of the junior ‘Nichole is the best shortstop in school history.
‘She had great range and a rifle for an arm. She was your Dream Team shortstop as a freshman,? he said.
‘Nichole has been All League for three years, All District for three years, and All Region this year,? said Davis.
Woityra led the team in each of their offensive categories, with a .503 batting average, 71 hits, 14 doubles, eight triples, .780 slugging percentage, .553 on base percentage, 49 runs scored, 42 RBI and .930 fielding average.
Lauren LaPine, a sophomore centerfielder, finished with a .465 batting average, 60 hits, 15 stolen bases, 38 runs scored and .972 fielding average.
‘She is the fastest leadoff hitter in our program’s history,? Davis said.
Named to All League OAA I, All Region and All-District for two years is junior Kelsey Stout at first base.
‘Kelsey is a converted centerfielder,? Davis said. ‘She has a great glove and an outstanding stretch at first.?
Stout finished with a .375 batting average, 48 hits, seven doubles, five triples, one homerun, .409 on base percentage, 11 sacrifices (team leader), 42 runs scored, 28 RBI, and .974 fielding percentage.
