Lucille Saunders remembered
Brandon Twp.-Lucille Saunders was remembered as a caring person, dedicated to her family and community.
The former Brandon Township and Village of Ortonville clerk died May 14 in Palmetto, Fla.
She was 83.
‘She always thought about the community first, as well as the schools,? recalled Clyde Fischer.
As superintendent of the Brandon School District, Fischer hired Saunders in 1969 as a secretary. He remembers one time when the school driveway was plowed and a neighbor’s driveway was plowed in as well.
‘She (Lucille) chewed me out, and from then on, we took care of the neighbor’s driveway also,? he said. ‘She was fun to be with. She worked long hours and stayed until the last minute to get the board book out for meetings.?
Saunders was born Harriet Lucille Westerby on March 23, 1924 in Dearborn to John and Irene Westerby, but was known to everyone as Lucille. The family movedto Groveland Township when she was a child, and she graduated from Ortonville High School and married Elwyn (Red) Saunders on June 16, 1945. They had five children.
Hart eyed for two districts? top spots
Goodrich – In May the school board voted to extend Superintendent Kimberly Hart’s contract for one year; however, she decided to explore other options. Hart was announced as one of two final candidates up for the job of superintendent of Kenowa Hills Public Schools in Grand Rapids. Additionally, she was one of eight applicants vying for the superintendent position in Oxford Schools.
New board members in Goodrich, Brandon
Both Brandon and Goodrich school boards had a new look this year following the May 8 election. F. Luke Frye replaced outgoing Board Member Ken Quisenberry on the Brandon School Board., while in Goodrich, Linda Jackson was elected to her first term.
Bess seeks re-election
Ortonville-In May, longtime Village Council President Sue Bess announced she would seek another term, despite four recall petitions filed againist her last year and nearly two decades serving in the office. Bess, 57, had been on the council for 21 years, 18 of those as council president.
