Goodrich-The long anticipated new meeting place for residents is ready for use just in time for this month’s village council meeting.
The freshly completed lower floor of the Gordon H. Bachmann Department of Public Works,10242 Hegel Road, now boasts about 1,500 square feet of space for meetings and village needs. Council meetings previously took place on the second floor of the Goodrich-Atlas Lyceum 10237 Hegel Road.
Construction on the $1 million DPW and Goodrich administrative offices on three acres began in spring 2004. The structure is 4,400 square feet and is currently used to house equipment in addition to the offices.
Although use of the lower level for meetings was intended since it’s conception, council member Pete Morey said the village did not have to funds to complete the project, with costs originally estimated at $65,000.
Morey said it was after local contractor Mark Baldwin offered to bid to do the job for $26,000 that things really began moving forward.
‘The council worked hard to save residents money,? said Morey.
Balwin’s plans included carpet, tile and two bathrooms as well as a drinking fountain. Efforts to finish the space began on June 1, said Morey. Additionally, the new meeting room offers a small kitchen area and elevator access.
The Goodrich village council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug.14 in the new meeting area.
