Twp. grass fire chars10 acres, homes spared

Atlas Township firefighters, along with Davison Township, responded to a grass fire at 3:15 p.m. Monday along Gale Road near McCandlish Road. Township Fire Chief Fred Forys said a passerby noticed the fire along Gale Road and attempted to extinguish the blaze with a piece of carpet.
‘The wind came up and fanned the fire out into the field, then into a swampy area,? said Forys. ‘It’s just the perfect conditions for a grass fire, with dead grass and strong winds. It’s a tough fire to put out. Our guys, along with Davison, did a great job of containing the fire just to about 10 acres. Residents need to be very cautious in the spring with the amount of dead grass around from the winter still.?
Forys said the blaze was put out in about two hours. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown.
